The Chesapeake Curling Club appreciates all the support and involvement in the fun we had from the various GNCC club teams who participated in this year’s Funspiel. There were 5 teams from Triangle, 3 from Pittsburgh, 1 from Ardsley, 4 from Plainfield, 4 from Potomac and 3 from Chesapeake. We especially appreciated the support of our Refreshment Center, the Silent Auction and Lobster Raffle.

The Funspiel is an annual Open bonspiel competition hosted by the Chesapeake
Curling Club and held during the third weekend in January. Although the theme changes
from year to year, it was named and begun in 1986 by Charlie Flamand who was a great
enthusiast of the game. During the inaugural event the club hosted 16 teams and have seen the
number fluctuate between 10 and 20 over the years.
The first event award is named in
Charlie’s honor and memory. The second event is named in memory of Betty Whitlock who
from the beginning, along with her husband Chet, worked untiringly to make the club a success. The third event is named in honor of Clyde Erwin who was a long time supporter of our club. He recently retired from curling and moved to Connecticut with his wife Grace.
We all miss Charlie, Betty, and Clyde and their never-failing support of our club.
